Many people are seduced into using online marketing because there are lots of free services – like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, WordPress, Blogger, etc. However, if you just to use a method of promotion because it’s free, you will end up with a scatter gun approach.

Explore all the possibilities before deciding what you are going to use to promote your business online.

Understand the difference between sales and relationship building and choose appropriate media for each.

Decide what you are willing to do and what you don’t enjoy (as you will find reasons not to do it!). Consistency is essential so find things that you feel comfortable doing.

Discover the tools that integrate several activities so you aren’t reinventing the wheel; it will save time and effort. You can put one message in twenty or thirty places with just a couple of clicks if you’re clever!

Don’t try to do too much. Pick a couple of things and make them part of your daily habits, then add more later.

Don’t mix business with pleasure! Remember where business stops and personal stuff begins and don’t get distracted. Put aside time for catching up with friends on Facebook, but don’t let it sidetrack you when you’re managing your business presence.

Test and measure. Ask where people heard about you – but be aware that online marketing works by many mentions so don’t dump things too quickly.
